3 Keys to Longevity

The issue

A lot of people can start, but the key is being consistent over a long period of time. So many people start their fitness journey with consistency but are so quick to fall out it for a number of different reasons. Whether it is injury, lack of time, not seeing the results you want or whatever the reason may be, they fall out of the habits that they were working so hard to build. How do you stop that? Let’s take a look at 3 things to do to avoid having to start over with your fitness.

Don’t start out too strong

So many people go from very little activity to intense workouts out of nowhere to see results as quickly as possible, but that can be dangerous. First, that can put a lot of new stress on your body which can result in injury. The goal is to keep you healthy so you are able to be more active for a long period of time rather than overdo it for a couple days and have to heal for a long period of time. Having this approach can completely overwhelm someone as well. It can be very intimidating for someone to go into a gym for the first time. It is important to listen to yourself and challenge yourself, but in increments at a time.

Track your progress

We are here for a reason, and that is to better yourself. However, that can look different for each individual, which is why it is key to understand your goals. For example, some people want to build their summer body while others are simply looking to be more healthy. Whatever your goals may be, it is important to find something measurable so you can identify your wins and celebrate them! Following the SMART goal approach is the best way to go about setting up these goals which is explained great in this article from the University of California.

Be okay with the imperfect

Every day can bring up challenges where it is difficult to stay committed to your goals. But luckily, one day does not define the journey. Every one will have a day where they are not going to be able to work out or eat poorly, but the key is not letting that bad day compound to multiple bad days. Getting back on track is so important to showing yourself that you can have a bad day without it turning into a bad week or month. Even when you have these days it is important to realize that something is better than nothing. Maybe you are mentally exhausted and the last thing you want to do is go to the gym, so you go on a outdoor walk instead. That can be great in keeping the momentum without exhausting yourself.

Final thoughts

I think something that all 3 of these things have in common is to be kind to yourself. Treat your body and your mind with care and understanding knowing that you don’t need to be perfect to see a difference in yourself. The important thing is creating long term and sustainable habits that put you on the right track to meeting your goals.

  1. A thoughtful and highly practical post! I especially appreciate how you focus on sustainability rather than quick results. Too often, people approach fitness with an “all or nothing” mindset, only to become discouraged when life gets in the way.

Your three key points—starting gradually, tracking progress, and embracing imperfection—are excellent reminders that lasting success comes from consistency, not intensity. I particularly liked the idea that “something is better than nothing.” A short walk, a few stretches, or a healthy meal choice can keep the momentum alive and prevent a temporary setback from becoming a permanent one.
