Solo Workouts vs. Working Out with Somone

Everyone has a preference on whether they would like to workout by themselves or with someone. And, let’s face it, a lot of times it just depends on the day. If I had a long day at work and am dragging I am probably not going to want to have to be social. On the other hand, if I am lacking motivation and need someone to make me go to the gym, that is when I’m hitting someone up to come with me. There are a few other things to consider as well when you’re contemplating sending that “Gym?” text.

Time: Obviously the more people you are working out with, the longer you will be at the gym. If time is an issue it may be best to fly thorough a quick controlled workout by yourself (nothing drives me more crazy than your gym buddy taking forever between sets). If you have time to spare then working out with some friends could be great!

Competition: The thing I love about working out with others is the unspoken competition. It is definitely best to have the, “I am competing against myself” attitude in weight training, but if you are a competitive person it hard not to compete with your gym buddy. I fall into this category and think the competition is very beneficial because it guarantees that you are going to get my best every set.

Maintaining the same schedule: Even if you love to workout with someone, it is not possible all the time. It is very important to train the same muscle group when you go solo so you are able to remain on the same schedule as your gym partner. Nothing is worse than the leg day- arm day combo… that just doesn’t work.

These are the main things I suggest considering when you are deciding if you want a gym partner. Not going to lie, I think I prefer solo workouts. There is something about putting my headphones in, doing my own thing in my own world that I really enjoy. However, when I do workout with someone, I do have a favorite gym partner (Pictured below). She loves this picture of herself as I’m sure you can imagine.

What do your prefer, solo workouts or with someone? Let me know in the comments below!
