When you decide to workout you are often left with the decision of whether to workout by yourself or with someone else. There are pros and cons to both, and I encourage you to try both before you decide which one you prefer.
WITH A FRIEND: I personally love having someone to workout with. I try to workout with my friends/girlfriend whenever our schedules allow it. I like this because it holds you accountable and is a lot more difficult for you to skip out on a workout when someone else is relying on you being there. It also gives you motivation to push yourself during your workout. I really enjoy working out with someone who lifts close to the same weight that I do, or have the same goals because it brings out the competitive side in each other and makes us both work hard. Having a friend workout with you also allows you to have a sense of camaraderie with each other. After going through the same workouts together you’ll be able to recognize the progress that each of you are making and be proud of one another. The only bad things about working out with a friend are possible scheduling difficulties and your workout will most likely take longer.
BY YOURSELF: Working out by yourself can be a good thing as well. It will minimize distractions and ensure that you are completely focused on your workout the entire time. Going solo is also nice because you are completely on your own schedule. You can decide to workout whenever you want, you can take as much time between sets as you need, and you can choose to do whatever lifts that you want to do. The only cons to lifting by yourself is the absence of that sense of camaraderie, which is fine if you are easily self-motivated.
Is it too much to ask for both? Personally, I like to do both. There are some days where I need the extra motivation so I invite someone to workout with me, but there are other days where I feel like working out with someone will just be distracting. A healthy mixture of both will allow you to get the right workout environment you need to push yourself and get the most out of your workouts. Do your prefer to workout by yourself or with someone?
